Answer: Option B — First Schedule
Detailed Solution
The First Schedule of the Constitution lists the names of the States and the Union Territories of India, and describes their territories.
Contents of the First Schedule:
- Part I: the names of the States and their territories.
- Part II: the names of the Union Territories and their territories.
- At present, India has 28 States and 8 Union Territories.
Changes in the First Schedule:
- The First Schedule is changed whenever a new state or Union Territory is created, or when the name or boundaries of a state are changed.
- Such changes are made by Parliament by ordinary law, under the provisions on the admission, establishment and formation of states, and are not treated as constitutional amendments under the formal procedure.
Major changes:
- The original Constitution (1950) classified the states into Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D states.
- The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, abolished this classification and reorganised the states mainly on a linguistic basis, creating 14 states and 6 Union Territories.
- Later, many new states were created, such as Maharashtra and Gujarat (1960), Nagaland (1963), Haryana (1966), Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand (2000), and Telangana.
- In 2019, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into two Union Territories.
- In 2020, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged into a single Union Territory.
Name changes:
Madras State became Tamil Nadu, Mysore became Karnataka, Orissa became Odisha, and Pondicherry became Puducherry.
The Schedules of the Constitution:
The Constitution has twelve Schedules, which give details that support the main Articles.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Second Schedule deals with the emoluments of certain office-holders; the Seventh Schedule with the lists of subjects; the Eighth Schedule with the languages.
Quick tip
Remember: First Schedule = names and territories of the States and Union Territories (now 28 States and 8 UTs).
