Ghanakanta Bora Borbayan received the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to which dance?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Sattriya

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Ghanakanta Bora Borbayan, a master musician and dancer of Assam, received the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to the Sattriya dance and its music.

Ghanakanta Bora spent his life in the tradition of the satras, the Vaishnava monasteries of Assam, where Sattriya dance and music have been preserved for centuries. He was a master of the khol, the drum used in Sattriya music, and of the dance itself, and he trained many students. The title "Borbayan" is given in the satras to the chief or master player of the khol, which shows the high respect he earned in this tradition. He worked to preserve the old forms of Sattriya music and dance and to teach them to new generations, both inside and outside the satras.

Sattriya was created in the 15th-16th centuries by Srimanta Sankardev, the great saint, poet and social reformer of Assam, who spread Vaishnavism and devotion to Lord Krishna. He created the Ankiya Naat, one-act plays performed with music and dance, and the Sattriya dance developed as part of these performances, known as Bhaona. For centuries, the dance was performed mainly by male monks (bhokots) in the satras, especially on the island of Majuli in the Brahmaputra. In 2000, the Sangeet Natak Akademi recognised Sattriya as one of the classical dances of India. Its music uses instruments such as the khol, the taal (cymbals) and the flute, and its songs include the borgeets composed by Sankardev and his disciple Madhavdev. Other famous Sattriya artists include Jatin Goswami and Indira P.P. Bora.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Manipuri is the classical dance of Manipur, linked with Vaishnavism.
  • ✗Bihu is the folk dance of Assam, performed during the Bihu festivals.
  • ✗Odissi is the classical dance of Odisha.

💡 Exam tip

Link Sattriya with Srimanta Sankardev, the satras of Assam (Majuli) and its recognition as a classical dance in 2000.
