Answer: Option C — 1984
Detailed Solution
Explanation
The Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1984, in honour of the legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, who was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. It is a national award given every year to musicians for their contribution to light music, especially film music, and it has been given to both composers and singers.
Lata Mangeshkar (1929-2022) was one of the greatest singers in the history of Indian music. She was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore. Her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical singer and theatre actor, and after his death in 1942 she began working in films to support her family. Over a career of more than seven decades, she recorded thousands of songs in more than 30 languages and sang for generations of actresses. She was known as the "Nightingale of India" and the "Queen of Melody". Her famous songs include "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon", which she sang in 1963 in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and countless film songs. She received the Padma Bhushan (1969), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), the Padma Vibhushan (1999) and the Bharat Ratna (2001). She died in Mumbai on 6 February 2022. Her sisters, including Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Khadikar, and her brother, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, are also musicians.
Madhya Pradesh honours other great musicians born in the state, such as Kishore Kumar, who was born in Khandwa, through the Kishore Kumar Samman. The Government of Maharashtra has also instituted an award in Lata Mangeshkar's name.
