Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — K.V. Mahadevan

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Mahadevan. The National Film Award for Best Music Direction was first given at the 15th National Film Awards, for films of 1967. The first recipient was K.V. Mahadevan, for his music in the Tamil film "Kandan Karunai" (1967).

Krishnankoil Venkadachalam Mahadevan (1918-2001) was a famous composer of Tamil and Telugu film music. He was born in Krishnankoil, in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. He composed music for more than 600 films over a career of about five decades, from the 1940s to the 1990s. He was known for his deep knowledge of Carnatic music and his ability to use classical ragas in film songs. His famous films include the Tamil film "Thiruvilaiyadal" (1965), with its well-known devotional songs, and the Telugu film "Sankarabharanam" (1980), directed by K. Viswanath, which is regarded as one of the greatest musical films in Indian cinema and is based on Carnatic music. He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction a second time for "Sankarabharanam". His long-time assistant, Pugazhendhi, worked with him on most of his films.

The National Film Awards were instituted in 1954 and are presented by the Government of India, through the Directorate of Film Festivals. They are among the most prestigious film awards in India. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in Indian cinema, is presented at the same ceremony. Its first recipient was the actress Devika Rani, in 1969.

Why not the other options?

Naushad was a famous Hindi film composer of "Mughal-e-Azam" and "Baiju Bawra". He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1981.

S.D. Burman was a famous Hindi film composer of "Guide" and "Pyaasa". He won the National Film Award for "Zindagi Zindagi".

Ilaiyaraaja is a legendary Tamil film composer who has won several National Film Awards, but later.

💡 Exam tip

Remember the "firsts" of Indian film awards: K.V. Mahadevan (first National Award for Best Music Direction, 1967) and Devika Rani (first Dadasaheb Phalke Award, 1969).
