Answer: Option D — Sursagar
Detailed Solution
Surdas, the 16th-century blind poet of the Bhakti movement, sang the glory of Lord Krishna in his famous collection of songs called "Sursagar" ("Ocean of Sur").
About the Sursagar:
- It is a large collection of devotional songs (padas) in Braj Bhasha, the dialect of the Mathura-Vrindavan region.
- It describes the childhood (bal-lila) and youth of Krishna in Braj, his playful activities, and his love with Radha and the gopis (cowherd women).
- It is famous for its tender descriptions of the child Krishna and his mother Yashoda, which are regarded as among the finest in Hindi literature.
- It also includes the "bhramar-geet", songs in which the gopis express their longing for Krishna after he leaves Braj for Mathura.
- The songs are meant to be sung, and are still popular in devotional music.
About Surdas:
- He lived in the 16th century (traditionally about 1478-1583).
- He is believed to have been blind, possibly from birth, according to tradition.
- He became a disciple of Vallabhacharya, and lived at Govardhan near Mathura, singing at the Shrinathji temple.
- He was one of the eight poets known as the "Ashtachhap".
- According to tradition, Akbar met him and admired his songs.
Other works attributed to him:
"Sur Saravali" and "Sahitya Lahari".
His place in Hindi literature:
- He is regarded as the "Sun" of Hindi literature (with Tulsidas as the "Moon"), according to a popular saying.
- He is one of the greatest poets of Krishna-bhakti (Saguna bhakti).
Other Bhakti works:
- "Ramcharitmanas": by Tulsidas, in Awadhi (devotion to Rama).
- "Bijak": the collection of Kabir's teachings.
- "Padmavat": by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, a Sufi poem.
- "Gita Govinda": by Jayadeva, in Sanskrit, on Radha and Krishna.
- Mirabai: wrote songs in Rajasthani and Braj in devotion to Krishna.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Ramcharitmanas, Bijak and Padmavat are works of other poets.
Quick tip
Remember: Sursagar = Surdas (Braj Bhasha; Krishna's childhood and the gopis; Ashtachhap poet; disciple of Vallabhacharya); Ramcharitmanas = Tulsidas; Bijak = Kabir.
