Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Dr B.R. Ambedkar

Detailed Solution

Ambedkar. "Waiting for a Visa" is a short autobiographical account written by Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956) in about 1935-36. In it, he describes his own experiences of untouchability and caste discrimination, from his childhood to his adult life after returning from studies abroad.

The work has six short sections. In the first, he recalls a journey as a boy, when he and his brothers travelled to Koregaon to meet their father; no one was willing to give them food, water or a cart ride once their caste was known. In another, he describes how, after returning from higher studies in the USA and Britain, he could not find a place to stay in Baroda, where he worked for the state, because of his caste. Other sections describe incidents that happened to other people. The title reflects the idea that an "untouchable" in his own country was treated like a foreigner waiting for permission to enter.

The work was published by the People's Education Society in 1990. It is used as a textbook at Columbia University in the USA, where Ambedkar had studied.

Ambedkar was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution and India's first Law Minister. His other major writings include "Annihilation of Caste" (1936), "The Problem of the Rupee" (1923), "Who Were the Shudras?" (1946), "The Untouchables" (1948) and "The Buddha and His Dhamma" (published in 1957). He embraced Buddhism at Nagpur on 14 October 1956 and received the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1990.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography is "The Story of My Experiments with Truth".
  • ✗Jawaharlal Nehru's autobiography is "An Autobiography" (also called "Toward Freedom").
  • ✗Jyotirao Phule wrote "Gulamgiri" (1873).

Quick tip

Remember: Ambedkar = "Waiting for a Visa", "Annihilation of Caste", "The Problem of the Rupee" and "The Buddha and His Dhamma". Phule = "Gulamgiri".
