The Lodha Committee reforms are associated with:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Cricket (BCCI)

Detailed Solution

The Lodha Committee was a three-member committee appointed by the Supreme Court of India in January 2015. It was headed by Justice R.M. Lodha, a former Chief Justice of India. The other members were Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice R.V. Raveendran.

The committee was set up after the scandal of betting and spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013. Its task was to decide punishments for those involved and to suggest reforms in the functioning of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which is the richest cricket board in the world but is registered as a private society.

In 2015, the committee suspended the owners of two IPL teams, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, for two years. In January 2016, it gave its main report on reforms of the BCCI. Its key recommendations included:

One state, one vote, so that each state association has only one vote in the BCCI.

An age limit of 70 years for office-bearers of the BCCI and state associations.

A limit on terms: office-bearers can serve a maximum of nine years in total, with a cooling-off period of three years between consecutive terms.

No minister or government servant should be an office-bearer.

Including representation of players through a players' association.

Placing the BCCI under the Right to Information Act and legalising betting were also suggested, but left to Parliament.

The Supreme Court accepted most of these recommendations in July 2016. Later, in 2018 and 2022, the Court relaxed some of them, such as the "one state, one vote" rule and the cooling-off period.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Banking reforms are linked with committees such as the Narasimham Committee.
  • ✗Police reforms are linked with the Prakash Singh case and the National Police Commission.
  • ✗Good to know
  • ✗Judicial reforms are linked with the Law Commission.

Quick tip

Remember: Lodha Committee (2015) = BCCI reforms after the IPL spot-fixing scandal: one state one vote, age limit 70 and cooling-off periods.
