Answer: Option C — 104th Amendment Act
Detailed Solution
The 104th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2019, ended the provision for the nomination of members of the Anglo-Indian community to the Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies, with effect from 25 January 2020.
Two main changes:
- It did not extend the reservation of seats for Anglo-Indians, which ended in January 2020.
- It extended the reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies for another ten years, until 25 January 2030.
The Anglo-Indian nomination:
- Article 331 allowed the President to nominate up to two members of the Anglo-Indian community to the Lok Sabha, if he or she felt that the community was not adequately represented.
- Article 333 allowed the Governor to nominate one member of the community to the state assembly.
- These provisions were included at the request of the Anglo-Indian leader Frank Anthony in the Constituent Assembly, and were to last for ten years; they were extended every ten years.
Reason for ending the nomination:
- The government said that, according to the 2011 Census, the population of Anglo-Indians was very small (a few hundred), and that the community was well integrated and did not need reserved seats.
- Members of the community disputed these figures.
Who are Anglo-Indians:
Under Article 366(2), an Anglo-Indian is a person whose father or any other male ancestor in the male line is of European descent, but who is domiciled in India and was born there of parents habitually resident in India.
Reservation for SCs and STs:
Article 334 lays down the time limit for the reservation of seats; it has been extended by amendments from time to time since 1960.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The 95th and 84th Amendments dealt with other matters; the 106th Amendment provides for reservation of seats for women.
Quick tip
Remember: 104th Amendment (2019, in force 25 January 2020) = ended Anglo-Indian nomination; extended SC/ST reservation in legislatures until 2030.

This topic covers the procedure for amending the Constitution under Article 368 and the most important amendments, such as the 1st, 7th, 42nd, 44th, 52nd, 61st, 73rd, 74th, 86th, 101st and 103rd Amendments, along with the basic structure doctrine. Exams ask what a particular amendment did: the 61st lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, the 73rd and 74th gave constitutional status to panchayats and municipalities, the 86th made education a Fundamental Right, and the 101st introduced GST. The 42nd Amendment (1976) is often called the 'mini-Constitution' because of how much it changed.
