Armed Forces Flag Day is observed in India on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 7 December

Detailed Solution

Armed Forces Flag Day is observed in India every year on 7 December.

About Armed Forces Flag Day:

It has been observed since 1949. On 28 August 1949, a committee set up under the Defence Minister decided to observe 7 December every year as Flag Day.

It is dedicated to honouring the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the Indian Armed Forces, especially those who have died or been disabled in service, and to supporting their families.

On this day, small flags and car stickers in the colours of the three services (red for the Army, dark blue for the Navy and light blue for the Air Force) are distributed to the public in exchange for donations.

The money collected goes to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF), which is managed by the Kendriya Sainik Board under the Ministry of Defence.

The fund is used for:

  • Rehabilitation of battle casualties.
  • Welfare of serving personnel and their families.
  • Resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families, including war widows.
  • In 1993, several separate funds were combined into the single Armed Forces Flag Day Fund.

Other important days of the armed forces:

Army Day: 15 January (K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1949).

Air Force Day: 8 October (the Indian Air Force was established in 1932).

Navy Day: 4 December (Operation Trident, the attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 war).

Vijay Diwas: 16 December (Pakistan's surrender at Dhaka in 1971).

Kargil Vijay Diwas: 26 July (victory in the Kargil War, 1999).

Armed Forces Veterans' Day: 14 January (the date K. M. Cariappa retired in 1953).

Territorial Army Day: 9 October.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗15 January is Army Day.
  • ✗8 October is Air Force Day.
  • ✗4 December is Navy Day.

Quick tip

Remember: Armed Forces Flag Day = 7 December (since 1949; flags in red, dark blue and light blue; Kendriya Sainik Board); Army Day = 15 January; Air Force Day = 8 October; Navy Day = 4 December.

Defence Technology & Missiles — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Defence Technology & Missiles, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's defence technology: the missiles developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and later, their types and ranges, DRDO, defence equipment such as aircraft, tanks, submarines and warships, and military exercises with other countries. Common questions ask what type a missile is (Prithvi is surface-to-surface, Akash is surface-to-air, and Nag is anti-tank), which missile was developed with Russia (BrahMos), and which countries take part in a joint exercise. Lists of exercises and newly inducted equipment change often, so check current affairs as well. Practise the defence technology and missiles questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
