Answer: Option A — 1206
Detailed Solution
The Delhi Sultanate was a series of five Muslim dynasties that ruled large parts of the Indian subcontinent from Delhi between 1206 and 1526.
Its foundation goes back to the conquests of Muhammad Ghori (Muizzuddin Muhammad bin Sam). In the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192, Ghori defeated the Chauhan king Prithviraj III (Prithviraj Chauhan), opening North India to Turkish rule. Ghori left his trusted slave general, Qutbuddin Aibak, in charge of his Indian conquests. When Ghori was assassinated in 1206, Aibak declared himself ruler at Lahore. This marks the beginning of the Delhi Sultanate.
The five dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate were:
- Mamluk or Slave dynasty (1206-1290): Qutbuddin Aibak, Iltutmish, Razia Sultan and Balban.
- Khalji dynasty (1290-1320): Jalaluddin Khalji and Alauddin Khalji.
- Tughlaq dynasty (1320-1414): Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, Muhammad bin Tughlaq and Firoz Shah Tughlaq.
- Sayyid dynasty (1414-1451): founded by Khizr Khan.
Lodi dynasty (1451-1526): Bahlul Lodi, Sikandar Lodi and Ibrahim Lodi. The Lodis were Afghans.
Aibak ruled from Lahore and died in 1210 after falling from his horse while playing chaugan (polo). He began building the Qutub Minar and the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque in Delhi. His successor, Iltutmish, is regarded as the real consolidator of the Sultanate; he shifted the capital to Delhi, received recognition from the Abbasid Caliph and introduced the silver tanka and copper jital coins.
The Sultanate ended in 1526, when Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat and founded the Mughal Empire.
