Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Waihind (Udabhandapura)

Detailed Solution

The capital of the Hindu Shahi kingdom in the north-west was Waihind (also called Udabhandapura or Hund), on the right bank of the Indus river, in present-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

About the Hindu Shahis:

  • They ruled over parts of present-day eastern Afghanistan, north-western Pakistan and the Punjab, from the 9th to the early 11th centuries.
  • They are also called the "Kabul Shahis" or "Odi Shahis".
  • They succeeded the Turk Shahis, who ruled Kabul earlier.
  • Their founder was a Brahmana minister named Kallar (or Lalliya), who overthrew the last Turk Shahi king in the 9th century.
  • They first ruled from Kabul, but moved their capital to Waihind (Udabhandapura) after Kabul was captured by Muslim rulers in the late 9th century.

Rulers and resistance:

  • The Hindu Shahis resisted the Turkish rulers of Ghazni, such as Sabuktigin and Mahmud of Ghazni, for many years.
  • Their kings included Bhimadeva, Anandapala and Trilochanapala.
  • They were defeated in several battles, and their kingdom came to an end in the early 11th century (around 1026 CE).
  • The scholar Al-Biruni praised them, saying that they were noble rulers who never failed in their duties.

Their coins:

Their silver coins, showing a bull and a horseman (the "bull-and-horseman" type), were widely used and copied in north India and Central Asia.

Their temples:

Hindu Shahi temples are found in the Salt Range (Punjab, Pakistan), such as the Katas Raj, Amb and Nandana temples.

About Waihind (Hund):

It was an important crossing point on the Indus, used by many invaders, including Alexander the Great (according to some scholars).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Lahore became important later, under the Ghaznavids.
  • ✗Peshawar was another city of the region.
  • ✗Kabul was their earlier capital.

Quick tip

Remember: Hindu Shahi capital = Waihind (Udabhandapura/Hund) on the Indus; earlier capital Kabul; resisted Mahmud of Ghazni; bull-and-horseman coins.
