Ram Navami, the birth anniversary of Lord Rama, is celebrated in which Hindu month?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Chaitra

Detailed Solution

Ram Navami, the birth anniversary of Lord Rama, is celebrated on the ninth day (Navami) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Chaitra, which usually falls in March or April. It is also the last day of the Chaitra Navratri, the spring Navratri.

Lord Rama is the seventh avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu and the hero of the epic Ramayana, written by the sage Valmiki. According to the Ramayana, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had no children for many years. After he performed a yajna, his three queens gave birth to four sons: Rama was born to Queen Kaushalya, Bharata to Queen Kaikeyi, and the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna to Queen Sumitra. Rama was born at noon on the Navami of Chaitra, which is why the main celebrations and prayers on Ram Navami are held at midday. Rama is regarded as "Maryada Purushottam", the ideal man, who always followed dharma (righteousness).

On Ram Navami, devotees fast, visit temples, read the Ramayana and the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas, and sing bhajans. Images of the infant Rama are placed in cradles and worshipped. Processions (shobha yatras) are taken out with images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, and some devotees perform the symbolic marriage of Rama and Sita (Sita Rama Kalyanam), especially at the Bhadrachalam temple in Telangana. The festival is celebrated with the greatest enthusiasm in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Rama, where lakhs of devotees bathe in the Sarayu river. A new temple, the Ram Mandir, was consecrated in Ayodhya in January 2024.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kartika is the month of Diwali, when Rama's return to Ayodhya is celebrated.
  • ✗Bhadrapada is the month of Krishna Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi.
  • ✗Ashvin is the month of Dussehra, when Rama's victory over Ravana is celebrated.

Quick tip

Remember: Ram Navami = Chaitra Shukla Navami (the last day of Chaitra Navratri), Ayodhya and the Bhadrachalam Sita Rama Kalyanam.
