The 'Husori' (Huchari), in which groups of men go from house to house singing and blessing families during Bihu, is associated with which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Assam

Detailed Solution

Husori (also spelt Huchari) is a tradition of carol singing performed during Rongali (Bohag) Bihu, the spring festival and New Year of Assam, celebrated in mid-April.

During Husori, groups of men, called husori parties, go from house to house in the village, singing traditional Bihu songs and devotional songs. They are accompanied by the music of the dhol (drum), the pepa (a pipe made of buffalo horn), the taal (cymbals), the gogona (a bamboo jaw harp) and the toka (a bamboo clapper). When the group arrives at a house, it stands in the courtyard in a circle, sings and dances, and blesses the family with good health, prosperity and happiness for the new year. In return, the family welcomes the singers with respect, offering them "tamul-paan" (betel nut and betel leaf), placed on a "xorai" (a traditional bell-metal tray), and often a "gamosa", the traditional white and red handwoven towel of Assam, as a token of respect. Sometimes money is also offered, which is used for community purposes.

Husori is believed to have been influenced by the devotional singing traditions of the Vaishnava satras, and many Husori songs combine the joy of spring with devotion to God. Husori competitions are held at many Bihu celebrations.

Rongali Bihu is the most joyful of the three Bihus. It is celebrated with Bihu dances by young men and women, Bihu songs (Bihugeet), feasts and visits to relatives. The first day, Goru Bihu, is dedicated to the worship and care of cattle, and the second day, Manuh Bihu, is the Assamese New Year, when people wear new clothes and seek the blessings of elders.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Tripura celebrates Kharchi Puja and Garia Puja.
  • ✗Manipur celebrates Yaoshang and Lai Haraoba.
  • ✗Arunachal Pradesh celebrates Losar and Solung.

Quick tip
