Answer: Option B — Assam
Detailed Solution
The Majuli Festival is an annual cultural festival held on Majuli, a large river island in the Brahmaputra river in Assam. It is usually held in November and showcases the culture, arts and crafts of the island and of Assam.
Majuli is one of the largest river islands in the world. It is the centre of the Neo-Vaishnavite culture of Assam, founded by the saint Srimanta Sankardev in the 15th-16th centuries. The island is home to many satras (Vaishnava monasteries), such as Auniati, Dakhinpat, Garmur and Kamalabari, which preserve Sattriya dance, music, the Bhaona (traditional theatre) and the art of mask making. Majuli became the first island district of India in 2016. The island is also home to tribal communities, especially the Mishing, Deori and Sonowal Kachari people, who are known for their stilt houses, handloom weaving and pottery. The island faces the serious problem of erosion by the Brahmaputra, which has greatly reduced its size over the past century.
The Majuli Festival, held on the banks of the river Luit (Brahmaputra), includes performances of Sattriya dance, folk dances of the tribes, Bhaona, music, seminars, exhibitions of handloom, handicrafts and masks, and food festivals.
Other festivals celebrated on Majuli include the Raas Leela (in November, by the satras), the Ali-Aye-Ligang (by the Mishings) and the Bihus.
Why not the other options?
- ✗West Bengal has islands in the Sundarbans, but Majuli is in Assam.
- ✗Bihar has river islands (diyaras) in the Ganga, but not Majuli.
- ✗Odisha is known for the Rath Yatra and Raja Parba.
Quick tip
Remember: The Majuli Festival = Assam, the Brahmaputra, the satras and Majuli as India's first island district (2016).
