Detailed Solution
India's first 3D planetarium, the Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, was opened in 2014 at the Pilikula Nisargadhama in Mangaluru (Mangalore), Karnataka. It is run by the Pilikula Regional Science Centre.
About the Swami Vivekananda Planetarium:
- It has an 18-metre dome that is tilted at 15 degrees, which gives viewers a more immersive view.
- It uses an optical-mechanical star projector together with a 3D digital projection system, and viewers wear 3D glasses to watch the shows.
- It shows the night sky, the planets, stars, galaxies and other astronomical objects, and runs shows on topics such as the solar system, black holes and space missions.
- It was built with the help of the Department of Science and Technology and is named after Swami Vivekananda, to mark his 150th birth anniversary.
- Pilikula Nisargadhama is a large eco-tourism and education centre in Mangaluru, with a zoo (biological park), botanical garden, lake, heritage village and science centre.
Other famous planetariums of India:
- P. Birla Planetarium (Birla Planetarium), Kolkata: opened in 1963, it is the largest planetarium in Asia (by some accounts) and one of the oldest in India.
- Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi (Teen Murti Bhavan, 1984) and Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai (Worli, 1977).
- Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Bhubaneswar, named after the 19th-century Odia astronomer Pathani Samanta, who made accurate astronomical measurements with simple instruments.
- Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bengaluru (1989).
- Science City, Kolkata, is one of the largest science centres in India.
- India's science museums are mostly run by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), set up in 1978 under the Ministry of Culture, with its headquarters in Kolkata.
Why not the other options?
Kolkata has the M. P. Birla Planetarium (1963), one of India's oldest.
New Delhi has the Nehru Planetarium.
Bhubaneswar has the Pathani Samanta Planetarium.
Quick tip
Remember: India's first 3D planetarium = Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, Pilikula, Mangaluru (2014); M. P. Birla Planetarium = Kolkata (1963).

Firsts in India & World — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
