Answer: Option A — Loktak Lake (Manipur)
Detailed Solution
India's first floating elementary school was started on Loktak Lake in Manipur. It was set up for the children of fishermen who live in huts built on the "phumdis" (floating islands) of the lake. Many of these children could not go to regular schools on land because their families lived and worked on the lake.
The school was run on a phumdi, so that children could study near their homes. It was part of efforts to bring education to communities living in remote and difficult places.
About Loktak Lake:
It is the largest freshwater lake in North-East India, located in Bishnupur district, near Moirang, about 40 km south of Imphal.
It is famous for its "phumdis", floating masses of vegetation, soil and organic matter in different stages of decay. Some phumdis are thick enough to support huts. Local fishermen build circular fish enclosures from them, called "athapum".
The Keibul Lamjao National Park, on the southern side of the lake, is the only floating national park in the world. It is made up mostly of phumdis.
Keibul Lamjao is the last natural home of the endangered "Sangai" (brow-antlered deer or Manipur's dancing deer), the state animal of Manipur.
Loktak Lake was declared a Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance) in 1990. Because of threats such as pollution, siltation and changes in water levels after the Ithai Barrage was built for the Loktak Hydroelectric Project, it was placed on the "Montreux Record" (a list of Ramsar sites under threat) in 1993.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Chilika Lake (Odisha) is India's largest brackish water lagoon, famous for Irrawaddy dolphins and migratory birds.
- ✗Vembanad Lake (Kerala) is the longest lake in India and hosts the Nehru Trophy boat race (on its Punnamada part).
- ✗Good to know
- ✗Dal Lake (Srinagar) is famous for houseboats and "shikaras".
Quick tip
Remember: First floating elementary school = Loktak Lake, Manipur (phumdis); Keibul Lamjao = world's only floating national park (Sangai deer); Loktak = Ramsar (1990), Montreux Record (1993).

Firsts in India & World — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
