Answer: Option D — Hyderabad
Detailed Solution
India's first Open Rock Museum was inaugurated in Hyderabad, Telangana, in December 2019 by the then Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Harsh Vardhan. It is located on the campus of the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad.
About the Open Rock Museum:
It is an open-air museum displaying about 35 different types of rocks collected from various states of India.
The rocks come from different parts of the Earth's history. Their ages range from about 3.3 billion years to about 55 million years.
The rocks on display include granite, basalt, charnockite, limestone, sandstone, marble and others, collected from places such as Odisha, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Each rock has a description explaining its type, origin, age and the region it came from.
The museum aims to create awareness among students and the public about the different kinds of rocks found in India and how they formed, and to make earth science more interesting.
Types of rocks:
Igneous rocks: formed when molten magma or lava cools and solidifies, such as granite and basalt. They are called "primary rocks".
Sedimentary rocks: formed when layers of sediment are pressed together over time, such as sandstone, limestone and shale. Fossils are usually found in these rocks.
Metamorphic rocks: formed when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure, such as marble (from limestone), slate (from shale) and quartzite (from sandstone).
India's rocks:
- The Deccan Traps of Maharashtra and nearby areas are made of basalt, formed by huge volcanic eruptions about 66 million years ago.
- The Aravalli range in Rajasthan is one of the oldest fold mountain ranges in the world.
- The Dharwar rocks of Karnataka are very old and rich in metallic minerals.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bengaluru, Jaipur and Bhopal have geological and other museums, but India's first open rock museum is in Hyderabad.

Firsts in India & World — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
