The Bhadla Solar Park, rated as the world's largest photovoltaic solar park when it was completed, is in which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Rajasthan

Detailed Solution

The Bhadla Solar Park is located at Bhadla in Phalodi tehsil of Jodhpur district (now in Phalodi district), Rajasthan, in the Thar desert. When it was fully completed around 2020, it was rated as the world's largest solar photovoltaic (PV) park, with a total capacity of about 2,245 MW spread over about 5,700 hectares (about 14,000 acres). Since then, even larger solar parks have been built in China and elsewhere.

Why Bhadla is ideal for solar power:

  • It is in a sandy, dry, almost barren region with very little vegetation.
  • It gets a very high level of sunlight, with about 300-330 sunny days a year.
  • The land is mostly unsuitable for farming, so it can be used for solar plants.

Challenges:

  • High temperatures (often above 45 degrees Celsius) reduce the efficiency of solar panels.
  • Sandstorms cover the panels with dust, so they need regular cleaning; robots are used for water-free cleaning.
  • The park was developed in several phases by the state and central governments, with private developers building solar plants inside it.

Other large solar parks in India:

  • Pavagada Solar Park (Shakti Sthala): Tumakuru district, Karnataka, about 2,050 MW.
  • Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park: Andhra Pradesh, about 1,000 MW.
  • NP Kunta Solar Park: Andhra Pradesh.
  • Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Park: Madhya Pradesh, 750 MW, which supplies power to the Delhi Metro.
  • Khavda Renewable Energy Park: Kutch, Gujarat, planned at about 30,000 MW (30 GW) of solar and wind, which will be the world's largest renewable energy park when completed.

Rajasthan has the highest installed solar power capacity among Indian states. India's target is 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Gujarat has the Khavda and Charanka parks.
  • ✗Karnataka has the Pavagada park.
  • ✗Andhra Pradesh has the Kurnool and NP Kunta parks.

Quick tip

Remember: Bhadla Solar Park = Jodhpur/Phalodi, Rajasthan (~2,245 MW); Pavagada = Karnataka; Rewa = Madhya Pradesh (powers Delhi Metro); Khavda = Gujarat (planned 30 GW).

This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
