Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Flipflopi

Detailed Solution

The Flipflopi is the world's first sailing boat (a traditional dhow) made entirely from recycled plastic waste. It was built in 2018 on the island of Lamu, on the coast of Kenya, by local boat builders led by Ali Skanda, under a project started by Ben Morison and Dipesh Pabari.

About the Flipflopi:

  • It is about 9 metres long and was made from about 10 tonnes of plastic waste collected from beaches and towns, which was shredded, melted and moulded into planks.
  • Its outer surface is covered with about 30,000 discarded flip-flops (rubber slippers) collected from beaches, which give it its bright, multi-coloured look and its name.
  • In 2019, it made a historic 500-km voyage from Lamu in Kenya to Zanzibar in Tanzania, stopping at coastal towns along the way to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
  • The project was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as part of its "Clean Seas" campaign, which aims to reduce marine plastic pollution.
  • In 2020, the Flipflopi sailed on Lake Victoria in Uganda to spread the same message.

Plastic pollution facts:

  • Millions of tonnes of plastic enter the oceans every year, harming marine life and entering the food chain as microplastics.
  • Kenya banned single-use plastic bags in 2017, with some of the world's toughest penalties.
  • India announced a ban on many single-use plastic items from 1 July 2022.
  • The theme of World Environment Day 2018, hosted by India, was "Beat Plastic Pollution".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Plastiki was a catamaran made of about 12,500 reused plastic bottles that sailed across the Pacific in 2010, but it was not made entirely from recycled plastic waste.
  • ✗Ocean Cleanup is a Dutch organisation that develops technology to remove plastic from the oceans.
  • ✗Kon-Tiki was the balsa wood raft used by Thor Heyerdahl to cross the Pacific in 1947.

This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
