Which is India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — INS Vikrant (2022)

Detailed Solution

INS Vikrant (IAC-1, Indigenous Aircraft Carrier-1) is India's first aircraft carrier designed and built in India. It was commissioned into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 September 2022 at Kochi, Kerala. On the same day, the Navy's new ensign (flag), inspired by the seal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was unveiled.

About INS Vikrant:

  • It was designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a public sector shipyard in Kochi.
  • It is about 262 metres long and 62 metres wide, with a displacement of about 43,000-45,000 tonnes, making it the largest warship ever built in India.
  • About 76% of its content is indigenous, and it was built with steel made by SAIL.
  • It can carry about 30 aircraft, including MiG-29K fighter jets and helicopters.
  • It uses a "STOBAR" (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) system, with a ski-jump ramp for take-off.
  • With this ship, India joined a small group of countries (such as the USA, the UK, Russia, France and China) that can design and build their own aircraft carriers.

Its name means "courageous" or "victorious". It is named after India's first aircraft carrier, the earlier INS Vikrant, which was bought from Britain (originally HMS Hercules), commissioned in 1961, and played an important role in the 1971 war against Pakistan. It was decommissioned in 1997.

India's other aircraft carriers:

  • INS Viraat (formerly HMS Hermes): served from 1987 to 2017; it was the world's longest-serving warship.
  • INS Vikramaditya (formerly the Russian Admiral Gorshkov): commissioned in 2013.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗INS Vikramaditya was bought from Russia (2013).
  • ✗INS Viraat was bought from Britain (1987-2017).
  • ✗INS Arihant is India's first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, not an aircraft carrier.

Quick tip

Remember: First indigenous aircraft carrier = INS Vikrant (IAC-1), Cochin Shipyard, commissioned 2 September 2022; first carrier (bought) = old INS Vikrant (1961); INS Vikramaditya = ex-Admiral Gorshkov.
