Who, along with Chandramukhi Basu, was among the first two women graduates of Calcutta University (1883) and later became one of India's first women doctors?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Kadambini Ganguly

Detailed Solution

Kadambini Ganguly (born Kadambini Bose, 1861-1923) and Chandramukhi Basu became the first two women graduates of the University of Calcutta in 1883, earning BA degrees from Bethune College. They were among the first women graduates in the entire British Empire.

Kadambini Ganguly's achievements:

  • She was born in Bhagalpur (Bihar) into a Brahmo Samaj family.
  • After graduating, she joined the Calcutta Medical College in 1884, becoming one of its first women students.
  • In 1886, she earned the GBMC (Graduate of Bengal Medical College) degree, which allowed her to practise medicine.

Along with Anandibai Joshi, she is regarded as one of the first two Indian women to be trained in Western (modern) medicine. Anandibai Joshi earned her medical degree from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in the USA in 1886.

In 1892, she went to Britain and obtained further medical qualifications from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin.

She was one of the first women delegates to the Indian National Congress, attending its 1889 session in Bombay, and she spoke at the 1890 session in Calcutta.

She worked for the welfare of women coal miners in Bihar and Odisha.

Her husband, Dwarkanath Ganguly, was a social reformer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj.

Chandramukhi Basu later became the principal of Bethune College, the first woman head of an undergraduate college in South Asia.

The University of Calcutta was established in 1857, along with the universities of Bombay and Madras.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Anandibai Joshi was the first Indian woman to earn a medical degree, from the USA (1886).
  • ✗Savitribai Phule was India's first woman teacher, who opened a school for girls in Pune in 1848.
  • ✗Pandita Ramabai was a social reformer who founded the Arya Mahila Samaj and the Sharada Sadan.
