Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Sardar Baldev Singh

Detailed Solution

Sardar Baldev Singh (1902-1961) was the first Defence Minister of independent India. He held the post in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet from 15 August 1947 to 1952. He had earlier been the Defence Member in the Interim Government formed in September 1946.

About Baldev Singh:

  • He was born in Dumna, in Ropar district (now Rupnagar), Punjab.
  • He was an industrialist and a Sikh political leader, associated with the Panthic Party and the Akali movement.
  • He served as the Development Minister in the Punjab government before independence.
  • He represented the Sikhs in the negotiations with the British Cabinet Mission (1946) and in the talks on the transfer of power and Partition.
  • He was a member of the Constituent Assembly.

As Defence Minister, he oversaw the division of the armed forces between India and Pakistan after Partition, and the first India-Pakistan war over Kashmir (1947-48), which ended with a UN-brokered ceasefire on 1 January 1949.

Some later Defence Ministers:

  • K. Krishna Menon (1957-1962): he resigned after India's defeat in the 1962 war with China.
  • B. Chavan (1962-1966): Defence Minister during the 1965 war with Pakistan.
  • Jagjivan Ram (1970-1974): Defence Minister during the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
  • Indira Gandhi held the Defence portfolio as an additional charge as Prime Minister.
  • Nirmala Sitharaman (2017-2019): the first full-time woman Defence Minister.
  • Rajnath Singh: Defence Minister since 2019.

Other firsts in Nehru's first cabinet:

  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel: Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
  • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad: Education Minister.

Dr B. R. Ambedkar: Law Minister.

  • K. Shanmukham Chetty: Finance Minister.

Rajkumari Amrit Kaur: Health Minister.

Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee: Industry and Supply Minister.
