Detailed Solution
Dr Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya (1880-1959) was the first Governor of Madhya Pradesh. He served from 1 November 1956, when the new state of Madhya Pradesh was formed, until 1957. (He had earlier been Governor of the old state of Madhya Pradesh, formed from the Central Provinces and Berar, from 1952.)
About Pattabhi Sitaramayya:
- He was born in Gundugolanu, Andhra Pradesh, and was a doctor by profession.
- He was a freedom fighter and a close follower of Mahatma Gandhi.
- He founded the Andhra Bank in 1923 at Machilipatnam.
In 1939, at the Tripuri session (near Jabalpur), he was the candidate supported by Gandhi in the election for the Congress presidency. He was defeated by Subhas Chandra Bose. Gandhi famously said, "Pattabhi's defeat is my own defeat."
He later served as President of the Indian National Congress at the Jaipur session in 1948.
He wrote "The History of the Indian National Congress" (1935), the first official history of the party.
He was a member of the Constituent Assembly.
About Madhya Pradesh:
- The present state of Madhya Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956 under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, by merging the old Madhya Pradesh with Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal state.
- Its first Chief Minister was Pandit Ravishankar Shukla.
- Its capital is Bhopal.
In 2000, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh. Even after that, Madhya Pradesh is the second-largest state in India by area, after Rajasthan.
Why not the other options?

- ✗Hari Vinayak Pataskar was a later Governor of Madhya Pradesh (1957-1965).
- ✗C. Reddy was the first Chief Minister of Mysore state and later Governor of Madhya Pradesh.

Firsts in India & World — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Firsts in India & World, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers the first persons and events in India and the world: the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to hold major offices, the first to climb Everest or reach space, and India's first institutions, newspapers, railways and satellites. It also covers the largest, longest, highest and smallest records in India and the world. These are pure memory questions, so revise them as short lists by theme: first women, first in sports, first in science and space, and first in governance. Be careful with the exact wording, such as 'first Indian' versus 'first person of Indian origin', or 'first woman President' versus 'first woman Prime Minister', since options are often designed to exploit this. Practise the firsts in India and the world questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
