Answer: Option D — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
Detailed Solution
The Bardoli Satyagraha was a peasant movement in the Bardoli taluka of the Surat district, in present-day Gujarat, in 1928. It was a successful example of non-violent resistance by farmers.
In 1926-27, the Bombay Presidency government increased the land revenue in Bardoli by about 22%, at a time when farmers were suffering from floods and falling prices. The peasants' appeals were ignored. They invited Vallabhbhai Patel, a lawyer from Ahmedabad who had already led the Kheda Satyagraha (1918) with Gandhi, to lead their struggle.
Under Patel's leadership, the farmers launched a no-tax campaign in February 1928. They refused to pay the increased revenue. Patel organised the movement very efficiently, dividing the taluka into camps, using volunteers and publishing a news bulletin. The government responded harshly by seizing land, cattle and property and auctioning them. However, the peasants, including many women, remained united and non-violent. Social boycott was used against those who bought the confiscated land. The movement received support across India; K.M. Munshi and Lalji Naranji resigned from the Bombay Legislative Council in support.
Finally, the government appointed an inquiry, the Maxwell-Broomfield Committee, which found the increase unjustified and reduced it to about 6.03%. The confiscated lands were returned.
Because of his leadership in this movement, the women of Bardoli gave Vallabhbhai Patel the title "Sardar", meaning "leader" or "chief". After Independence, as India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, he integrated more than 560 princely states into India and became known as the "Iron Man of India". His birthday, 31 October, is observed as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas), and the Statue of Unity in Gujarat honours him.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Mahatma Gandhi supported the movement but did not lead it directly.
- ✗Jawaharlal Nehru was not the leader of this movement.
- ✗Rajendra Prasad was associated with the Champaran Satyagraha in Bihar.
Quick tip
Remember: Bardoli Satyagraha (1928) = Vallabhbhai Patel, no-tax campaign, title "Sardar" given by the women of Bardoli; Kheda (1918) = also with Patel.
