Answer: Option D — Karnataka

Detailed Solution

Agumbe is a small village in the Shivamogga (Shimoga) district of Karnataka, in the Malnad region of the Western Ghats.

About Agumbe:

  • It is called the "Cherrapunji of the South" because it receives one of the highest rainfalls in south India, with an average of about 7,600 mm (7.6 m) a year.
  • Most of the rain falls during the south-west monsoon, from June to September.
  • It is surrounded by dense tropical rainforests that are rich in plants and animals.
  • It is famous as the "capital of the king cobra", because it has a large population of king cobras, the world's longest venomous snake.
  • The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) was founded in 2005 by the herpetologist Romulus Whitaker to study and protect the king cobra and the rainforest ecosystem.
  • Other animals include the lion-tailed macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, Malabar pit viper and many frogs and birds.
  • It is part of the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and close to the Kudremukh National Park.
  • It is known for its sunset point, from which the sun can be seen setting over the Arabian Sea on clear days.
  • Several waterfalls, such as Barkana Falls, Jogigundi Falls and Onake Abbi Falls, are nearby.

The popular TV series "Malgudi Days" (1986), based on the stories of R. K. Narayan and directed by Shankar Nag, was largely filmed in Agumbe.

Rainfall facts about India:

  • Mawsynram (Meghalaya) is often listed as the wettest place on Earth, followed by Cherrapunji (Sohra).
  • The lowest rainfall in India is in western Rajasthan (for example, Jaisalmer) and in Leh (Ladakh).

About the Western Ghats:

  • They are one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots.
  • They were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
  • They are called "Sahyadri" in Maharashtra.
  • The highest peak of the Western Ghats is Anamudi (2,695 m) in Kerala.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kerala has the Silent Valley rainforest.
  • ✗Tamil Nadu has the Nilgiris.
  • ✗Goa has the Mollem National Park.

Quick tip

Remember: Agumbe = Shivamogga, Karnataka ("Cherrapunji of the South"; king cobra capital; research station founded by Romulus Whitaker, 2005; "Malgudi Days" filmed here); wettest place = Mawsynram.

Climate, Soils & Vegetation of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Climate, Soils & Vegetation of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers the climate of India and the monsoon, the seasons and the distribution of rainfall, the major soil types (alluvial, black, red, laterite, arid and mountain soils), and India's natural vegetation, including the types of forests and the states where they are found. Common questions ask which soil is best for cotton (black or regur soil), where laterite soil forms, which place receives the highest rainfall (Mawsynram in Meghalaya), and what 'mango showers' and the 'retreating monsoon' are. Questions on forest types usually link a forest type to its rainfall and to trees such as teak, sal and sundari.
