Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Odissi dance

Detailed Solution

The correct answer is Odissi dance. The maharis were women who were dedicated to the service of Lord Jagannath at the temple in Puri, Odisha, much like the devadasis of the temples of South India. Their dance, performed as part of the daily rituals and festivals of the temple, is one of the main roots of Odissi, the classical dance of Odisha.

The word "mahari" is often explained as "maha nari" (great woman) or "mahan ari" (one who defeats the great enemies, meaning the five vices). The maharis performed dance and sang devotional songs, especially verses from the Gita Govinda of Jayadeva, the 12th century Sanskrit poem about the love of Radha and Krishna, in front of the deity at specific times of the day, such as during the evening rituals. There were two main types of maharis: the bhitari gauni, who danced in the inner sanctum, and the bahari gauni, who danced outside, during festivals. Over time, the mahari tradition declined, and from the 16th century, young boys called gotipuas, dressed as girls, also began to perform dance in praise of Jagannath. In the 20th century, the mahari system came to an end, and the last of the maharis, Sashimani Devi, died in 2015. However, the mahari dance tradition, together with the gotipua tradition and the temple sculptures of Odisha, provided the foundation for the revival of Odissi in the 1950s and 1960s by gurus such as Kelucharan Mohapatra, Pankaj Charan Das, Deba Prasad Das and Mayadhar Raut. Guru Pankaj Charan Das, who came from a mahari family, is often called the "Adi Guru" of Odissi.

  • Kuchipudi developed in Andhra Pradesh as a dance-drama tradition of Brahmin men.
  • Sattriya developed in the sattras (monasteries) of Assam.

💡 Exam tip

Odissi has two main historical roots: the maharis (women temple dancers of the Jagannath temple) and the gotipuas (young boys dressed as girls).

Indian Dance Forms — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Indian Dance Forms, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

Indian dance forms are one of the most frequently tested areas of static GK. This topic covers the eight classical dances recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam and Sattriya), the folk and tribal dances of every state, and related terms such as mudra, abhinaya, lasya and tandava. Most questions ask which state a dance belongs to, which community performs it, or which feature identifies a classical style. Learn the classical dances with their state and one signature feature each, such as the face make-up of Kathakali or the brass plate of Kuchipudi. For folk dances, group them state by state, since exams often list three or four dances and ask for the common state. Watch for dances shared by more than one state, such as Chhau, which has three styles. Practise the Indian dance forms questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
