Answer: Option B — Kavichandra Kalicharan Pattanayak

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Kalicharan Pattanayak (1898-1978) was an Odia poet, playwright, musician and scholar. He is credited with giving the name "Odissi" to the classical dance of Odisha in the 1950s, during the period when the dance was being revived and reconstructed.

Before the 1950s, the dance traditions of Odisha were known by different names, such as the dance of the maharis (temple dancers of the Jagannath temple at Puri) and the dance of the gotipuas (young boys who danced dressed as girls). In the late 1950s, a group of gurus, scholars and artists came together, especially through an association called Jayantika, to study these traditions, the temple sculptures and old texts such as the Abhinaya Chandrika, and to give the dance a clear structure. Kalicharan Pattanayak strongly argued that the dance was a classical form, with its own distinct identity, roots in the Natyashastra and a long history, and he proposed the name "Odissi". His arguments helped the dance gain recognition as a classical form, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi recognised it. He was honoured with the title "Kavichandra" for his literary work and received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Odissi is known for its two basic postures, the chauka (a square stance, representing Lord Jagannath) and the tribhanga (three bends in the body), its sculptural poses and its link with the Gita Govinda. Its recital follows the order Mangalacharan, Batu, Pallavi, Abhinaya and Moksha.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kelucharan Mohapatra was the greatest guru of the Odissi revival, but he did not coin the name.
  • ✗Jayadeva was the 12th century poet who wrote the Gita Govinda, which is often performed in Odissi.
  • ✗Pankaj Charan Das was another great guru of the Odissi revival, called its "Adi Guru".

💡 Exam tip

Link the name "Odissi" with Kavichandra Kalicharan Pattanayak, and the revival of Odissi with Kelucharan Mohapatra, Pankaj Charan Das, Deba Prasad Das and Mayadhar Raut.

Indian Dance Forms — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Indian Dance Forms, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

Indian dance forms are one of the most frequently tested areas of static GK. This topic covers the eight classical dances recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam and Sattriya), the folk and tribal dances of every state, and related terms such as mudra, abhinaya, lasya and tandava. Most questions ask which state a dance belongs to, which community performs it, or which feature identifies a classical style. Learn the classical dances with their state and one signature feature each, such as the face make-up of Kathakali or the brass plate of Kuchipudi. For folk dances, group them state by state, since exams often list three or four dances and ask for the common state. Watch for dances shared by more than one state, such as Chhau, which has three styles. Practise the Indian dance forms questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
