Answer: Option A — 30 May 1987
Detailed Solution
Goa became the 25th state of India on 30 May 1987. This day is celebrated as "Goa Statehood Day".
History of Goa:
- Goa was a Portuguese colony for about 450 years, from 1510, when it was captured by Afonso de Albuquerque from the Bijapur Sultanate.
- After India's independence in 1947, Portugal refused to give up its territories in India.
- The Goa liberation movement included satyagrahas by Indian volunteers in 1954-55.
On 19 December 1961, the Indian Armed Forces liberated Goa, Daman and Diu in "Operation Vijay". The Portuguese Governor-General, Manuel António Vassalo e Silva, surrendered. 19 December is celebrated as "Goa Liberation Day".
The 12th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1962 made Goa, Daman and Diu a Union Territory.
In 1967, a referendum called the "Goa Opinion Poll" was held, in which the people of Goa voted against merging with Maharashtra. This kept Goa's separate identity.
How Goa became a state:
- The Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganisation Act, 1987 made Goa a separate state, while Daman and Diu remained a Union Territory.
- The 56th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1987 provided for a Legislative Assembly of 30 members for Goa.
- Pratapsingh Rane was the Chief Minister when Goa became a state.
- In 2020, the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged into one Union Territory.
- Konkani, the official language of Goa, was added to the Eighth Schedule by the 71st Amendment Act, 1992.
Statehood in 1987:
- Mizoram: 20 February 1987 (23rd state).
- Arunachal Pradesh: 20 February 1987 (24th state).
- Goa: 30 May 1987 (25th state).
Later states:
Chhattisgarh (26th), Uttarakhand (27th) and Jharkhand (28th) in 2000; Telangana (29th) in 2014.
Why not the other options?
- ✗19 December 1961 is Goa Liberation Day.
- ✗20 February 1987 is when Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh became states.
- ✗1 November 1956 is when several states were reorganised under the States Reorganisation Act.
Quick tip
Remember: Goa = 25th state on 30 May 1987 (Liberation Day 19 December 1961, Operation Vijay; Opinion Poll 1967); Mizoram (23rd) and Arunachal (24th) = 20 February 1987.
