How many States and Union Territories are there in India at present (2026) ?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 28 States and 8 Union Territories

Detailed Solution

In 2026 India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories, so option C is correct. The eight Union Territories are Delhi, Puducherry, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The position of 29 states and 7 Union Territories existed from the creation of Telangana in 2014 until 2019. In October 2019 the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories gave 28 states and 9 Union Territories, and the merger of Dadra and Nagar Haveli with Daman and Diu in January 2020 reduced the number of Union Territories to 8. No new state has been created after Telangana.
