'Litti Chokha' is a famous dish of which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Bihar

Detailed Solution

"Litti Chokha" is the most famous traditional dish of Bihar. It is also popular in Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh (the Purvanchal region).

About Litti Chokha:

"Litti" are balls of whole-wheat flour dough stuffed with "sattu" (roasted gram/chickpea flour) mixed with spices, onion, garlic, ginger, green chillies, lemon juice, mustard oil and pickle masala.

Traditionally, the littis are roasted over a fire of cow-dung cakes or charcoal, which gives them a smoky flavour. They can also be baked in an oven or fried.

They are usually dipped in or served with ghee.

"Chokha" is a spicy mash made from roasted brinjal (baingan), boiled potatoes and roasted tomatoes, mixed with mustard oil, onion, garlic, green chillies and coriander.

It is a simple, nutritious and filling meal, originally eaten by farmers and travellers because it is easy to carry and does not spoil quickly.

Sattu, the main filling, is rich in protein and fibre and is called the "poor man's protein" or "Bihari superfood". It is also used to make a cooling summer drink.

Other famous foods of Bihar:

  • Khaja: a layered, crispy sweet; the "Silao Khaja" has a GI tag.
  • Tilkut: a sweet made of sesame seeds and jaggery, especially from Gaya.

Makhana (fox nut): Bihar produces most of India's makhana; "Mithila Makhana" received a GI tag in 2022. A Makhana Board was announced in the 2025 Union Budget.

Anarsa, Thekua (offered during Chhath Puja) and Malpua.

Shahi Litchi of Muzaffarpur: GI tag (2018).

Traditional dishes of other states:

  • Rajasthan: Dal Baati Churma.
  • Gujarat: Dhokla, Khandvi and Undhiyu.
  • Punjab: Makki di Roti and Sarson da Saag.
  • Jharkhand: Dhuska.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Rajasthan's signature dish is Dal Baati Churma.
  • ✗Gujarat is famous for Dhokla.
  • ✗Punjab is famous for Makki di Roti and Sarson da Saag.

Quick tip

Remember: Litti Chokha = Bihar (wheat balls stuffed with sattu, with mashed brinjal-potato chokha); Dal Baati Churma = Rajasthan; Dhokla = Gujarat; Mithila Makhana GI = 2022.
