Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Uttarakhand

Detailed Solution

Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, in the Kumaon region, at a height of about 1,870 metres.

About Ranikhet:

Its name means "Queen's meadow". According to a local legend, Rani Padmini, the queen of the Kumaon king Raja Sudhardev, was charmed by the beauty of the place, and the king built a palace for her there.

The British developed it as a hill station and established a cantonment in 1869.

It is the home of the Kumaon Regimental Centre (KRC) and the Naga Regimental Centre of the Indian Army.

The Kumaon Regiment is one of the most decorated regiments of the Indian Army. Major Somnath Sharma of the Kumaon Regiment received India's first Param Vir Chakra (posthumously) for his bravery in the Battle of Badgam (1947). Its soldiers also fought heroically at Rezang La in Ladakh in the 1962 war, under Major Shaitan Singh (Param Vir Chakra).

Ranikhet has a war memorial and a museum (the Kumaon Regimental Museum).

It has one of the highest golf courses in Asia, at Upat.

The Chaubatia Gardens, a government orchard and fruit research centre, is famous for apples, peaches, apricots and other fruits.

It gives views of Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

"Ranikhet disease" is a viral disease of poultry; it was named after the town, where it was first identified in India in 1939.

  • ✗West Bengal has Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

Quick tip

Remember: Ranikhet = Almora, Uttarakhand ("Queen's meadow"; Kumaon and Naga Regimental Centres; Chaubatia orchards); Lansdowne = Garhwal Rifles; Kausani = "Switzerland of India".
