Answer: Option C — 1972
Detailed Solution
The AIADMK was founded on 17 October 1972 by the film actor and politician M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), after he was expelled from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
Background:
The Dravidian movement began with the Justice Party and E.V. Ramasamy "Periyar", who founded the Self-Respect Movement and later the Dravidar Kazhagam.
C.N. Annadurai broke away from the Dravidar Kazhagam and founded the DMK in 1949.
The DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu (then Madras State) in 1967, ending Congress rule in the state.
After Annadurai's death in 1969, M. Karunanidhi became Chief Minister.
Formation of the AIADMK:
- MGR, a popular film star and DMK treasurer, raised questions about corruption in the party and demanded accounts.
- He was expelled from the DMK in 1972 and formed a new party, first called the Anna DMK, named after Annadurai.
- The prefix "All India" was added later.
AIADMK in power:
- The party won the Tamil Nadu Assembly election in 1977, and MGR became Chief Minister.
- He remained Chief Minister until his death, winning successive elections.
After MGR, J. Jayalalithaa became the leader of the party and served as Chief Minister several times.
After Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, Edappadi K. Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam led the party at different times; later, Palaniswami became its General Secretary.
Symbol and politics:
- The party's election symbol is "two leaves".
- It has been the main rival of the DMK in Tamil Nadu politics, and the two parties have alternated in power for decades.
Other important Tamil Nadu parties:
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), founded by S. Ramadoss.
Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK), founded by Vaiko.
Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), founded by actor Vijayakanth.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1949 is the year the DMK was founded.
- ✗1967 is the year the DMK first came to power in the state.
- ✗1984 is incorrect for the founding of the AIADMK.
Quick tip
Remember: AIADMK founded by MGR in 1972 (split from the DMK); DMK founded by C.N. Annadurai in 1949.
