Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1 November

Detailed Solution

Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava (Formation Day) is observed every year on 1 November. Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh and became the 26th state of India on 1 November 2000.

About the formation of Chhattisgarh:

  • It was created under the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000.
  • It was formed from 16 Chhattisgarhi-speaking districts in the south-east of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Ajit Jogi became its first Chief Minister.
  • The demand for a separate state had been raised for many decades, on the basis of the region's distinct culture, language (Chhattisgarhi) and large tribal population.

Three new states in 2000:

  • Chhattisgarh: 1 November 2000 (from Madhya Pradesh); the 26th state.
  • Uttarakhand (originally called Uttaranchal): 9 November 2000 (from Uttar Pradesh); the 27th state.
  • Jharkhand: 15 November 2000 (from Bihar); the 28th state.
  • Telangana later became the 29th state on 2 June 2014 (from Andhra Pradesh).

About Chhattisgarh:

Capital: Raipur. A new planned capital, "Nava Raipur Atal Nagar", is being developed.

The name is believed to come from "chhattis garh" ("36 forts").

It is rich in minerals, such as coal, iron ore (Bailadila), bauxite, limestone and tin. It is the only state producing tin ore in India.

The Bhilai Steel Plant, set up with Soviet help (1955-59), is in Chhattisgarh.

It is called the "Rice Bowl of India" (or "Rice Bowl of Central India") because of its large rice production.

Chitrakote Falls on the Indravati river is called the "Niagara of India".

Bastar is famous for its tribal culture, the Bastar Dussehra (celebrated for 75 days) and "Dhokra" metal craft.

Other states formed on 1 November:

  • Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh (1956), under the States Reorganisation Act.
  • Haryana (1966).
  • Punjab also celebrates 1 November (1966) as "Punjab Day".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗9 November is Uttarakhand's foundation day.
  • ✗15 November is Jharkhand's foundation day.
  • ✗2 June is Telangana's formation day.
