The Indian state that is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides is:

Answer View answer ā–¾

Answer: Option D — Tripura

Detailed Solution

Tripura, in north-eastern India, is surrounded by Bangladesh on the north, west and south. Only on its eastern side is it connected to the rest of India, through Assam and Mizoram.

Borders of Tripura:

  • Bangladesh: about 856 km, making up most of the state's boundary.
  • Assam: to the north-east.
  • Mizoram: to the east.

About Tripura:

  • It is the third smallest state of India by area, after Goa and Sikkim.
  • Its capital is Agartala, which lies very close to the Bangladesh border.
  • It became a full state on 21 January 1972, along with Manipur and Meghalaya, under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971.
  • Before 1949, it was a princely state ruled by the Manikya dynasty, which had ruled for centuries.

Geography:

  • Tripura is hilly, with several parallel ranges running north to south, such as the Jampui Hills, the highest range.
  • Major rivers include the Gomati, Khowai, Manu, Muhuri, Haora and Feni.
  • The Tropic of Cancer passes through it.

People and culture:

  • About one-third of the population belongs to tribal communities, such as the Tripuri, Reang (Bru), Jamatia, Chakma and Halam.
  • Bengali and Kokborok are the main languages.
  • The Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, built by the Manikya kings, now houses the State Museum.
  • The Tripura Sundari temple in Udaipur is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.

Economy:

  • Tripura is one of India's important producers of natural rubber.
  • It also produces bamboo products, tea and pineapples (the Queen variety, which received a GI tag).

Connectivity:

  • Because it is surrounded by Bangladesh, Tripura was long cut off from the rest of India, connected only through a long road via Assam.
  • Better rail links and agreements with Bangladesh for transit and port access have greatly improved its connectivity.

Why not the other options?

  • āœ—Meghalaya borders Bangladesh on its south and west, but not on three sides.
  • āœ—Mizoram borders Bangladesh on the west and Myanmar on the east and south.
  • āœ—Assam borders Bangladesh only along part of its boundary.

Quick tip

Remember: Tripura = surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides; capital Agartala; third smallest state; major rubber producer.
