The Mithi river flows through which city?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Mumbai
Detailed Solution
The Mithi river is a small river that flows through Mumbai, Maharashtra's capital and India's financial centre.
Course of the Mithi:
- It rises from the overflow of the Vihar and Powai lakes inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park area in northern Mumbai.
- It is about 18 km long.
- It flows through Powai, Saki Naka, Kurla, Kalina and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), passing close to the Mumbai airport.
- It drains into the Arabian Sea through the Mahim Creek.
The 2005 Mumbai floods:
- On 26 July 2005, Mumbai received about 944 mm of rain in 24 hours at Santacruz.
- The Mithi river overflowed, and the city was badly flooded; more than 1,000 people died in Maharashtra.
- Investigations found that the river had been narrowed by encroachments, construction and garbage, so it could not carry floodwater to the sea.
- Since then, the Mithi River Development and Protection Authority (MRDPA) was set up, and projects have been undertaken to widen, deepen and clean the river.
Pollution:
- The Mithi is heavily polluted by industrial waste, sewage and plastic.
- Its estuary at Mahim Creek has mangroves that are important for the coastal environment.
Other rivers of Mumbai:
Mumbai has four small rivers: Mithi, Dahisar, Poisar and Oshiwara.
About Mumbai:
- Mumbai was originally made up of seven islands, which were joined together by land reclamation between the 17th and 19th centuries.
- It is India's most populous city and the capital of Maharashtra.
- The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu), opened in January 2024, is India's longest sea bridge.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Chennai has the Cooum and Adyar rivers.
- ✗Kolkata lies on a branch of the Ganga.
- ✗Kochi lies on the backwaters of Kerala.
Quick tip
Remember: Mithi river = Mumbai; overflowed in the July 2005 floods; drains into Mahim Creek.
