Answer: Option B — Yamunotri glacier
Detailed Solution
The Yamuna rises from the Yamunotri glacier, on the south-western slopes of the Bandarpunch peaks, at a height of about 6,387 metres in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.
Yamunotri temple:
- The Yamunotri temple, dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, is located at about 3,293 metres, below the glacier.
- It is one of the four shrines of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand.
- It was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal in the 19th century and later renovated.
- The temple can be reached by a trek of about 6 km from Janki Chatti.
- Hot springs near the temple, such as Surya Kund, are used by pilgrims to cook rice and potatoes as an offering.
Course of the Yamuna:
- It flows south through the Garhwal Himalayas, receiving the Tons, its largest tributary in the hills.
- It enters the plains near Paonta Sahib and Dakpathar, forming the boundary between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh for some distance, and then between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
- It flows through Delhi, Mathura and Agra, and joins the Ganga at Prayagraj.
- Its total length is about 1,376 km.
In mythology:
- The Yamuna is considered the daughter of the Sun god, Surya, and the sister of Yama, the god of death.
- It is associated with Lord Krishna, who spent his childhood on its banks in Mathura and Vrindavan.
Water sharing:
- An agreement signed in 1994 among Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi governs the sharing of the Yamuna's waters.
- The Upper Yamuna River Board coordinates this.
Projects:
- The Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana diverts water into the Western and Eastern Yamuna canals.
- The Lakhwar and Kishau dam projects are planned in the upper basin.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Gangotri glacier is the source of the Bhagirathi.
- ✗Satopanth glacier is the source of the Alaknanda.
- ✗Milam glacier is the source of the Gori Ganga.
Quick tip
Remember: Yamuna rises from the Yamunotri glacier (Bandarpunch, Uttarkashi); Yamunotri = Char Dham shrine; joins the Ganga at Prayagraj.
