Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Bogibeel Bridge

Detailed Solution

The Bogibeel Bridge is a combined rail and road bridge over the Brahmaputra river in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. It is about 4.94 kilometres long and is India's longest rail-cum-road bridge. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 December 2018, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, celebrated as Good Governance Day.

The bridge has a double-line railway track on the lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper deck. It is India's first fully welded steel-concrete composite bridge, a design that makes it stronger and requires less maintenance. It was designed to withstand earthquakes, as the region lies in a highly seismic zone.

The bridge connects Dibrugarh on the south bank of the Brahmaputra with Dhemaji district on the north bank, which links to Arunachal Pradesh. It greatly reduces travel time and distance between eastern Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, and is strategically important for the movement of troops and equipment towards the China border. The project was sanctioned in 1997-98, and its foundation stone was laid by H.D. Deve Gowda in 1997, with work beginning under Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002.

Other important bridges in India:

  • Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya Bridge), Assam: about 9.15 km, India's longest bridge over water (road only), opened in 2017.
  • Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu), Maharashtra: about 21.8 km, India's longest sea bridge, opened in 2024.
  • Chenab Bridge, Jammu and Kashmir: the world's highest railway arch bridge, opened in 2025.
  • New Pamban Bridge, Tamil Nadu: India's first vertical-lift sea bridge, opened in 2025.
  • Saraighat Bridge, Guwahati: the first rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra (1962).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bhupen Hazarika Setu is a road bridge over the Lohit, a tributary of the Brahmaputra.
  • ✗Saraighat Bridge was the first rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra, at Guwahati.
  • ✗Vikramshila Setu is a road bridge over the Ganga at Bhagalpur, Bihar.

Quick tip

Remember: Bogibeel = longest rail-cum-road bridge (4.94 km, Dibrugarh, 2018); Bhupen Hazarika Setu = longest river road bridge (2017); Atal Setu = longest sea bridge (2024); Chenab = highest rail arch bridge.
