Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 19 December 1966

Detailed Solution

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a regional development bank established on 19 December 1966 to promote economic and social development in Asia and the Pacific. Its headquarters is in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, the Philippines.

The ADB was set up following a resolution of the UN Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), now ESCAP. It started with 31 members. Today, it has 69 members, of which 49 are from the Asia-Pacific region and the rest are from outside the region, such as the USA, the UK, Germany and Canada.

The ADB provides loans, grants, technical assistance and equity investments to its developing member countries for projects in sectors such as infrastructure (roads, power and water), education, health, agriculture, climate change and the environment. Its long-term strategy, "Strategy 2030", aims to achieve a prosperous, inclusive, resilient and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while continuing efforts to end extreme poverty.

Voting power in the ADB depends largely on the shares held by each member. Japan and the United States are the largest shareholders, each holding about 15.6% of the shares. China and India are the third- and fourth-largest shareholders. Because Japan is a leading shareholder, every President of the ADB has been Japanese. Masato Kanda became President in February 2025.

India is a founding member of the ADB and is one of its largest borrowers. The ADB publishes the Asian Development Outlook, which gives economic forecasts for the region.

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), headquartered in Beijing and set up in December 2015 (operational from January 2016) under China's leadership, is another multilateral development bank in the region. India is its second-largest shareholder after China.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗24 October 1945 is when the United Nations was established.
  • ✗1 January 1995 is when the WTO was established.
  • ✗25 December 2015 is when the AIIB came into existence.

Quick tip

Remember: ADB = 19 December 1966, Manila (Mandaluyong), Japan and USA largest shareholders, President always Japanese; AIIB = 2015-16, Beijing, India second-largest shareholder.
