'Kokborok' is one of the official languages of which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Tripura

Detailed Solution

Kokborok (also spelt Kokborok, meaning "language of the people", from kok, "language", and borok, "people") is the language of the Borok (Tripuri) people, the main indigenous community of Tripura. It is spoken by a large part of the state's tribal population. It belongs to the Bodo-Garo group of the Tibeto-Burman languages, and is related to Bodo and Dimasa of Assam and Garo of Meghalaya.

Kokborok was declared an official language of Tripura, along with Bengali, in 1979, through the Tripura Official Language Act. English is also used for official purposes. 19 January is celebrated in Tripura as Kokborok Day (Kokborok Divas) to mark this recognition.

Kokborok has a long history. The royal chronicles of the Tripura kings, the "Rajratnakar", were said to have been originally written in Kokborok in a script called "Koloma", though this has not survived; the chronicles were later written in Sanskrit and Bengali. Today, Kokborok is written in both the Bengali and the Roman scripts, and there has been debate about which script to use officially. The language is taught in schools and colleges in Tripura, and there is a demand to include it in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Tripura is a small state in north-eastern India, bordered on three sides by Bangladesh. It became a full-fledged state on 21 January 1972, under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, along with Manipur and Meghalaya. Its capital is Agartala. Bengali speakers form the majority of its population.

The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution now has 22 languages. Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali were the last four added, by the 92nd Amendment (2003).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Manipur's official language is Manipuri (Meitei), which is in the Eighth Schedule.
  • ✗Assam's official language is Assamese, with Bodo and Bengali in some areas.
  • ✗Sikkim has several official languages, including Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha and Limbu.

Quick tip

Remember: Kokborok = Tripura (official with Bengali since 1979, Kokborok Day 19 January); Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya became states on 21 January 1972.
