Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — the First World War

Detailed Solution

India Gate (originally called the All India War Memorial) was built in memory of the soldiers of the undivided British Indian Army who died in the First World War (1914-1918) and in the Third Anglo-Afghan War (1919).

About India Gate:

  • It was designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also designed much of New Delhi.
  • Its foundation stone was laid on 10 February 1921 by the Duke of Connaught.
  • It was completed and inaugurated in 1931 by the Viceroy, Lord Irwin.
  • It is about 42 metres high, and is built of red and buff sandstone and granite.
  • It stands at the eastern end of the Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath).
  • Its design resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
  • The names of more than 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on its walls.

India's role in the First World War:

  • More than 1.3 million Indian soldiers served in the war, in Europe, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, East Africa and elsewhere.
  • More than 70,000 Indian soldiers died.
  • Indian soldiers won many gallantry awards, including several Victoria Crosses; Khudadad Khan was the first Indian to win the Victoria Cross (1914).

The canopy:

  • A canopy near India Gate once had a statue of King George V; the statue was removed after Independence.
  • In 2022, a statue of Subhas Chandra Bose was installed under the canopy.

The National War Memorial:

  • The National War Memorial, near India Gate, was inaugurated in February 2019, in memory of soldiers who died in the wars fought by independent India.
  • The flame that burned under India Gate was merged with the flame at the National War Memorial in 2022.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗India Gate does not commemorate the soldiers of the Second World War or the Revolt of 1857, and it is not only for the Afghan Wars.

Quick tip

Remember: India Gate (All India War Memorial; Lutyens; foundation 1921, completed 1931) = soldiers of the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
