Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Chhattisgarh

Detailed Solution

The Bhoramdeo Temple is located in the Kabirdham (Kawardha) district of Chhattisgarh, at the foot of the Maikal hills.

About the Bhoramdeo Temple:

It was built in the 11th century (traditionally dated to about 1089 CE) by King Gopal Dev of the Nagavanshi dynasty (Phani Nagavanshi), who ruled the region.

It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its name comes from "Bhoramdeo", a local name for Shiva worshipped by the Gond tribe.

It is built in the Nagara style of temple architecture, on a raised platform, with a tall shikhara.

Its outer walls are covered with beautiful carvings of gods, goddesses, dancers, musicians, animals and erotic (mithuna) sculptures, similar to the temples of Khajuraho. For this reason, it is called the "Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh".

It stands beside a lake surrounded by hills and forests.

Nearby monuments:

  • Madwa Mahal (also called Dulha Dev Temple): built in 1349 by a Nagavanshi king to commemorate a royal marriage; it also has mithuna sculptures.
  • Cherki Mahal.
  • Every year, the "Bhoramdeo Mahotsav" (festival) is held in March-April, with music, dance and cultural programmes.
  • The Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary lies nearby.

Other famous temples of Chhattisgarh:

  • Mahamaya Temple, Ratanpur.
  • Danteshwari Temple, Dantewada: one of the Shakti Peethas.
  • Rajiv Lochan Temple, Rajim: Rajim is called the "Prayag of Chhattisgarh" for its confluence of rivers.
  • Bambleshwari Temple, Dongargarh.

About Khajuraho:

  • The temples of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh were built between about 950 and 1050 CE.
  • They are famous for their Nagara-style architecture and erotic sculptures.
  • The "Khajuraho Group of Monuments" was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Madhya Pradesh has the original Khajuraho temples.
  • ✗Odisha has the temples of Bhubaneswar and Konark.
  • ✗Jharkhand has the Baidyanath Dham temple at Deoghar.
