Answer: Option D — Gujarat
Detailed Solution
The Buland Darwaza ("High Gate" or "Gate of Magnificence") at Fatehpur Sikri was built by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Gujarat in 1573.
About the conquest of Gujarat:
- Gujarat was a rich province with important ports, such as Cambay (Khambhat) and Surat, which were centres of trade with West Asia and Europe.
- Akbar led a campaign to Gujarat in 1572 and conquered it.
- When rebellions broke out soon after, in 1573, Akbar made a famous rapid march from Agra to Ahmedabad, covering about 800 km in about 11 days, and crushed the rebels.
- The conquest gave the Mughals access to the sea and to the trade of the western coast.
- It also brought the Mughals into contact with the Portuguese.
About the Buland Darwaza:
- It is the southern gateway of the Jama Masjid at Fatehpur Sikri.
- It was built around 1575-76.
- It is about 54 metres (177 feet) high from the ground, including its high flight of steps, making it one of the highest gateways in the world.
- It is built of red and buff sandstone, decorated with white and black marble inlay.
- It has a huge arched entrance, with chhatris (kiosks) on top.
Its inscriptions:
- A Persian inscription on the gateway records Akbar's later conquests in the Deccan.
- Another inscription contains a saying attributed to Jesus: "The world is a bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it."
- This reflects Akbar's interest in different religions.
Other buildings at Fatehpur Sikri:
The Jama Masjid, the Diwan-i-Khas, the Panch Mahal, and the palaces of Akbar's queens.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bengal, Kashmir and Mewar were other regions conquered or fought over by Akbar.
