Answer: Option B — Tipu Sultan
Detailed Solution
The Daria Daulat Bagh ("garden of the wealth of the sea") at Srirangapatna, near Mysore in Karnataka, was built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 as his summer palace.
About the palace:
- It is built mainly of teakwood, in the Indo-Islamic style, and stands in a large garden.
- Its walls and ceilings are covered with colourful murals.
- The most famous mural shows the Battle of Pollilur (1780), in which the forces of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan defeated the British army led by Colonel William Baillie, during the Second Anglo-Mysore War.
- Other murals show the courts of Indian rulers, and scenes of daily life.
- Today, it houses a museum run by the Archaeological Survey of India, which displays paintings, coins and other objects related to Tipu Sultan.
About Srirangapatna:
- It is an island town in the river Kaveri, and was the capital of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan.
- It is named after the Ranganathaswamy temple.
- Tipu Sultan was killed here on 4 May 1799, during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, while defending the fort.
- His tomb, the Gumbaz, is also at Srirangapatna, next to the tombs of his father Haidar Ali and his mother.
About Tipu Sultan:
- He was born on 20 November 1750 at Devanahalli, near Bangalore.
- He was known as the "Tiger of Mysore", and used the tiger as his emblem.
- He introduced a new calendar, new coins, and new weights and measures.
- He tried to get help from the French against the British; he is said to have planted a "Tree of Liberty" at Srirangapatna and became a member of the Jacobin Club.
- He used rockets in warfare against the British.
- "Tipu's Tiger", a mechanical toy showing a tiger attacking a European soldier, is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Haidar Ali was Tipu's father; Krishnaraja Wodeyar III and Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar were rulers of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore.
Quick tip
Remember: Daria Daulat Bagh (Srirangapatna, 1784) = summer palace of Tipu Sultan; murals of the Battle of Pollilur (1780); Gumbaz = tomb of Haidar Ali and Tipu.
