Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Uttar Pradesh

Detailed Solution

The Dhamek Stupa is located at Sarnath, near Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh.

About the Dhamek Stupa:

  • It marks the place in the Deer Park (Rishipatana or Isipatana) at Sarnath where the Buddha gave his first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya.
  • This event is called "Dharmachakra Pravartana" ("Turning of the Wheel of Dharma").
  • An earlier stupa was built at the site by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE.
  • The present structure dates mainly from the Gupta period, around 500 CE, when it was enlarged.
  • It is a solid, cylindrical structure about 43.6 metres high and 28 metres in diameter.
  • Its lower part is built of stone and decorated with beautiful carved floral and geometric designs (Gupta style); the upper part is made of brick.

Other monuments at Sarnath:

The Ashoka Pillar: its famous Lion Capital, with four lions standing back to back on an abacus showing a wheel (dharmachakra), a lion, an elephant, a bull and a horse. It was adopted as the National Emblem of India on 26 January 1950. The wheel in the National Flag is also taken from it.

The Lion Capital is kept in the Sarnath Museum.

The Chaukhandi Stupa: marks the place where the Buddha met his five disciples. An octagonal tower was added on top by Emperor Akbar in 1588 to commemorate Humayun's visit.

The Dharmarajika Stupa (built by Ashoka) and the Mulagandhakuti Vihara.

The four main places of Buddhist pilgrimage:

  • Lumbini (Nepal): birth.
  • Bodh Gaya (Bihar): enlightenment.
  • Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh): first sermon.
  • Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh): mahaparinirvana (death).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bihar has Bodh Gaya and the Kesariya Stupa.
  • ✗Madhya Pradesh has the Sanchi and Bharhut stupas.
  • ✗Odisha has the Dhauli Peace Pagoda.

Quick tip

Remember: Dhamek Stupa = Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh (site of the Buddha's first sermon; Gupta period, about 500 CE); Sarnath Lion Capital = National Emblem (26 January 1950); Chaukhandi Stupa also at Sarnath.
