Answer: Option A — Gomti River
Detailed Solution
The Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir) in Dwarka, Gujarat, stands at the point where the Gomti river (creek) meets the Arabian Sea.
About the Dwarkadhish Temple:
- It is dedicated to Lord Krishna, worshipped as "Dwarkadhish" ("King of Dwarka").
- According to tradition, the original temple was built by Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, over Krishna's palace ("Hari Griha").
- The present temple was built in the 15th-16th centuries (with parts from earlier periods), in the Chalukya (Maru-Gurjara) style.
- It has a five-storey main shrine, supported by 72 pillars, and its main tower is about 78 metres high.
- It has two gateways: the "Moksha Dwar" (Gate of Salvation, the main entrance) and the "Swarga Dwar" (Gate of Heaven), which leads to 56 steps going down to the Gomti river.
- A large flag, made of 52 yards of cloth and decorated with the sun and moon, is changed several times every day.
- Dwarka is also one of the seven sacred cities ("Saptapuri").
- The "Dwarka Sharada Peetham", the western matha of Adi Shankaracharya, is located near the temple.
About Dwarka:
- It is located in the Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat, on the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula.
- According to legend, Krishna founded the city after leaving Mathura, and it was later submerged by the sea.
- Underwater archaeological explorations (by the National Institute of Oceanography and the ASI) have found remains of ancient structures off the coast.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi went scuba diving at the site of the submerged Dwarka in February 2024.
- "Sudarshan Setu" (2.32 km), India's longest cable-stayed bridge, opened in February 2024, connecting Okha with Beyt Dwarka island.
Nearby:
- Beyt Dwarka: an island with a temple of Krishna.
- Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.
- Rukmini Devi Temple.
Other rivers of Gujarat:
- Sabarmati: Ahmedabad is on its banks (Sabarmati Ashram).
- Narmada: the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the Statue of Unity.
- Tapi: Surat is on its banks.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Sabarmati flows through Ahmedabad.
- ✗Narmada flows past Bharuch.
- ✗Tapi flows past Surat.
Quick tip
Remember: Dwarkadhish Temple = Dwarka, on the Gomti river where it meets the Arabian Sea (Krishna; Moksha Dwar and Swarga Dwar; flag changed daily); Sudarshan Setu = Okha to Beyt Dwarka (2024); Ahmedabad = Sabarmati; Surat = Tapi.
