Detailed Solution
The Fateh Burj, described as the tallest victory tower (minar) in India, is located at Chappar Chiri, in the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) district of Punjab.
About the Fateh Burj:
- It is about 100 metres (328 feet) high.
- It was built by the Punjab government and opened in 2011.
- It commemorates the victory of the Sikh forces led by Banda Singh Bahadur over the Mughal governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, at the Battle of Chappar Chiri in May 1710.
- It is part of a memorial complex that includes statues of Banda Singh Bahadur and his generals, and a garden.
The Battle of Chappar Chiri (1710):
- Banda Singh Bahadur was sent to Punjab by Guru Gobind Singh to lead the Sikhs against Mughal oppression.
- Wazir Khan, the governor of Sirhind, had been responsible for the execution of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh (the "Chhote Sahibzade"), who were bricked alive at Sirhind in 1704-05.
- Banda Singh defeated and killed Wazir Khan at Chappar Chiri, and then captured Sirhind.
After the victory:
- Banda Singh established Sikh rule over a large area of Punjab, with his capital at Lohgarh (Mukhlisgarh).
- He issued coins in the name of the Sikh Gurus.
- He abolished the zamindari system in the areas he controlled, giving land rights to the tillers.
- He was later captured by the Mughals at Gurdas Nangal (1715) and executed in Delhi in 1716.
Other victory towers in India:
- Qutub Minar (Delhi): about 73 metres; begun as a victory tower.
- Vijay Stambha (Chittorgarh): about 37 metres.
- Kirti Stambha (Chittorgarh).
- Chand Minar (Daulatabad): about 63 metres.
About Mohali:
It is a city near Chandigarh, officially named Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, after the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh.
