Answer: Option A — Bikaner
Detailed Solution
The Junagarh Fort is located in the city of Bikaner, Rajasthan.
About the Junagarh Fort:
- It was built between 1589 and 1594 by Raja Rai Singh, the ruler of Bikaner, who was a general in the army of the Mughal emperor Akbar.
- It was originally called "Chintamani"; it was renamed "Junagarh" ("old fort") in the 20th century, when the royal family moved to the new Lalgarh Palace.
- Unlike most forts of Rajasthan, it is built on flat ground, not on a hill.
- It is surrounded by a moat and strong walls with bastions.
- According to tradition, it was never captured by an enemy in battle (except once, briefly).
Palaces inside:
- It contains several palaces and temples built by successive rulers, such as the Karan Mahal, Anup Mahal, Phool Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Badal Mahal and Ganga Niwas.
- The interiors are decorated with paintings, mirror work, gold leaf and carved red sandstone.
- The fort has a museum with collections of weapons, costumes, paintings and a First World War biplane.
About Raja Rai Singh:
- He was one of the important Rajput nobles of Akbar's court, and held a high mansab.
- He fought for Akbar in Gujarat, Kabul and other places.
About Bikaner:
- It was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, a son of Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur).
- It is in the Thar desert region of north-western Rajasthan.
- It is famous for its camels; the National Research Centre on Camel is located there.
- It is known for the Karni Mata temple at Deshnoke (with many rats regarded as sacred).
- The Ganga Canal, built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the 1920s, brought water from the Sutlej to Bikaner.
- Bikaner is also famous for "Bikaneri bhujia" (a snack).
Other forts of Rajasthan:
Mehrangarh (Jodhpur), Amber (Jaipur), Sonar Qila (Jaisalmer), Taragarh (Ajmer), Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Ajmer have other forts.
Quick tip
Remember: Junagarh Fort = Bikaner (built 1589-94 by Raja Rai Singh, Akbar's general; built on flat ground); Bikaner founded by Rao Bika (1488).
