The Katas Raj Temples complex, with shrines associated with several faiths, is located in:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Pakistan

Detailed Solution

The Katas Raj Temples are a complex of ancient Hindu temples located near the village of Katas, in the Chakwal district of Punjab province, Pakistan.

About the Katas Raj Temples:

  • They are located in the Salt Range, in the Pothohar Plateau region.
  • The temples are built around a sacred pond, called "Katas" or "Amar Kund".
  • According to Hindu tradition, the pond was formed from the tears of Lord Shiva, who wept after the death of his wife Sati.
  • The complex is also linked with the Mahabharata: it is believed that the Pandavas spent part of their exile here, and that Yudhishthira answered the questions of a Yaksha at the pond.

The temples were built over many centuries; the oldest are believed to date from about the 6th-7th centuries CE, built during the Hindu Shahi period. Many were rebuilt or added later.

The complex also has remains of a Buddhist stupa and later medieval and Sikh-era buildings, reflecting the area's diverse religious history.

Al-Biruni, the scholar who accompanied Mahmud of Ghazni, is believed to have stayed near Katas and studied Sanskrit there, and he used the area for his calculation of the Earth's radius.

After Partition, most Hindus migrated to India, and the temples fell into neglect.

The Government of Pakistan has carried out restoration work, and Indian Hindu pilgrims visit the complex under a 1974 bilateral protocol on visits to religious shrines.

In 2017, the Supreme Court of Pakistan took notice of the drying up of the sacred pond, caused by cement factories nearby using groundwater, and ordered steps to restore it.

Under the same protocol, pilgrims also visit shrines such as the Shadani Darbar (Sindh) and Sikh gurdwaras.

About the Salt Range:

It is a range of hills in Punjab, Pakistan, known for the Khewra Salt Mine, one of the oldest and largest salt mines in the world.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗India has many Shiva temples but not Katas Raj.
  • ✗Afghanistan has Buddhist sites like Bamiyan.
  • ✗Nepal is not where this temple complex is located.

Quick tip

Remember: Katas Raj Temples = Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan (Salt Range; sacred pond from Shiva's tears; Mahabharata link; Al-Biruni); Khewra = salt mine in the Salt Range; India-Pakistan shrine protocol = 1974.
