Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Uttar Pradesh

Detailed Solution

The Madan Mohan Temple is located in Vrindavan, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, on a hill called "Dwadashaditya Tila" near the Yamuna river (the Kali Ghat).

About the Madan Mohan Temple:

  • It is one of the oldest temples of Vrindavan.
  • It is dedicated to Lord Krishna in the form of "Madan Mohan" ("the one who charms Kamadeva, the god of love").
  • It is associated with Sanatana Goswami, one of the "Six Goswamis of Vrindavan", disciples of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who founded the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition in the 16th century.
  • The present temple was built around 1580 by Kapur Ram Das of Multan, a trader.
  • It is built of red sandstone in the Nagara style, with a tall, slender tower (about 20 metres high).

During the reign of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (late 17th century), the original idol was moved for safety to Karauli in Rajasthan, where it is still worshipped. A replica idol is worshipped in Vrindavan.

About Vrindavan:

It is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood and youth.

It has thousands of temples. Famous ones include:

  • Banke Bihari Temple: one of the most visited temples.
  • Govind Dev Temple (1590): built by Raja Man Singh of Amber; a large red sandstone temple.
  • Radha Raman Temple.
  • ISKCON Temple (Krishna-Balaram Mandir, 1975).
  • Prem Mandir (2012): a white marble temple built by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat.
  • Nidhivan and Seva Kunj.
  • A large "Banke Bihari Corridor" project has been proposed to manage crowds.

About the Braj region:

  • It includes Mathura (Krishna's birthplace, with the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple), Vrindavan, Gokul, Govardhan, Barsana (Radha's village, famous for "Lathmar Holi") and Nandgaon.
  • The "Braj Chaurasi Kos Parikrama" is a pilgrimage around the region.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Rajasthan has the original Madan Mohan idol at Karauli, but the temple in question is in Vrindavan.
  • ✗Madhya Pradesh has temples such as Omkareshwar.
  • ✗Gujarat has the Dwarkadhish and Somnath temples.

Quick tip

Remember: Madan Mohan Temple = Vrindavan, Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh (about 1580; Sanatana Goswami; original idol moved to Karauli, Rajasthan); Govind Dev Temple = Raja Man Singh (1590); Prem Mandir = 2012; Barsana = Lathmar Holi.
