Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Jodhpur

Detailed Solution

The Mehrangarh Fort is located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, on a rocky hill about 125 metres (410 feet) above the city.

About the fort:

  • Its foundation was laid in 1459 by the Rathore ruler Rao Jodha, who also founded the city of Jodhpur and made it his capital.
  • "Mehrangarh" means "Fort of the Sun" (from "mihir", sun, and "garh", fort), as the Rathores claimed descent from the sun god (Suryavanshi).
  • It is one of the largest and most impressive forts in India.
  • Its walls are up to 36 metres high and 21 metres wide.
  • It has seven gates (pols), including the Jai Pol (Victory Gate), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies, and the Fateh Pol, built after a victory over the Mughals.
  • The Loha Pol (Iron Gate) has handprints of royal women who committed sati.

Palaces inside:

  • Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) and Takhat Vilas.
  • The fort now houses a museum, with collections of palanquins, howdahs, weapons, paintings, costumes and furniture.

The legend:

According to legend, a hermit who lived on the hill cursed Rao Jodha when he was forced to leave, saying that the city would suffer from water shortage; to undo the curse, a man named Raja Ram Meghwal is said to have been buried alive in the foundations, and his family was given land and honours.

About Jodhpur:

  • It is known as the "Blue City" because of its blue-painted houses in the old city.
  • It is also called the "Sun City", because of its bright sunny weather.
  • The Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1943, is one of the largest private residences in the world.
  • "Jodhpurs" (riding trousers) are named after the city.

Other famous forts of Rajasthan:

  • Amber Fort (Jaipur).
  • Sonar Qila (Jaisalmer).
  • Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh (part of the "Hill Forts of Rajasthan" UNESCO site).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Jaipur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer have other forts.

Quick tip

Remember: Mehrangarh Fort = Jodhpur (founded 1459 by Rao Jodha; "Fort of the Sun"; Jai Pol, Loha Pol); Jodhpur = "Blue City".
